Using The Big Six to plan a trip to the Smoky Mountains

My friend and I are planning to go to the Smoky Mountains after graduation in May.  I decided to use the Big 6 to plan the trip.  "The Big 6 is a process of how people of all ages solve an information problem.  From practice and study, we find that successful information problem - solving encompasses six stages with two sub-stages under each.

  1. Task Definition
        1.1 Define the Information problem
        1.2 Identify information needed
    2. Information seeking strategies
        2.1 Determine all possible sources
        2.2 Select the best sources
    3. Location and Access
3.1 Locate sources (intellectually and physically)
        3.2 Find information within sources
    4. Use of information
4.1 Engage (e.g., read, hear, view, touch)
        4.2 Extract relevant information
     5. Synthesis
        5.1 Organize from multiple sources
        5.2 Present the information
     6. Evaluation
        6.1 Judge the product (effectiveness)
6.2 Judge the process (efficiency)" (The Big 6 overview)
Let's first define the information problem.  When a person is planning a trip they need a destination in mind.  Some research needs to be done to determine the best place to go on a trip.  I am interesting in visiting all of the big National Parks in the United States.  I needed to find information on the National Parks.  I printed out a map of all the parks in the United States and its territories.  There is a lot of parks.  I then found the found the 10 most visited parks of 2013.  This is when I chose the Smoky Mountains National Park.  I will post the sources in the next post.  I need information on how to get there - the directions, where I will stay, what I will do- be in a tour group, I will need to find out the weather and I will also need to find the best places to eat.  I am a vegetarian, so I will need to find places that serve vegetarian food.  I will also need to decide how many days and nights I will be there to reserve a room or a cabin.  I am now ready to go onto the next step.
